Grupo Modelo shared that its sustainability goals have a great objective: to provide solutions and face environmental and social challenges that allow it to continue fulfilling its dream of uniting people for a Better World in the next 100 years and more.
To achieve this Better World, it integrated 4 sustainability goals. Let's get to know a little more.
1. Smart Agriculture
100% of our direct farmers will be trained, connected and financially empowered.
For more than four years, Grupo Modelo has focused on transforming the Mexican countryside through sustainable development and the hiring of Mexican farmers.
“The sustainable development of the Mexican countryside is and will continue to be a priority for Grupo Modelo. We make efforts to raise awareness and train our farmers in the efficient use of irrigation water, soil conservation, conservation agriculture, good use of fertilizers and agrochemicals, use of renewable energy, and others.”
To date and towards this goal, Grupo Modelo has promoted the following:
Investment of 90 million pesos in mechanization programs since 2016.
Donation of more than 1,000 “pileting” machines during 2017 and 2018 to generate furrows in the cultivation area and capture more rainwater in dry areas; This prevents further soil erosion and increases yield by approximately 1 ton per hectare.
Promotion of projects for the efficient use of water with the aim of promoting measurement and awareness among our farmers.
Training and installation Chile Mobile Number List of technology for drip irrigation of more than 800 hectares in the state of Zacatecas.
Training producers in conservation tillage for the incorporation of barley straw into the soil, in order to increase the organic matter content in it, reactivate microbial life, reduce the use of fertilizer and provide greater retention capacity and savings in water consumption.
2. Water management
100% of our communities in high stress areas will have better water availability and quality.
Grupo Modelo has made a significant investment in technology, equipment and the design of new projects that allows it to maintain good water management and thereby preserve this resource.
“Our goal for 2025 is to reach 2.8 (our plant in Zacatecas, the largest in the world, since it operates below this goal, at 2.6). 50.9% of the total water captured by the Group is recovered, that is, it is no longer extracted from the aquifers."
It also has other programs focused on caring for, using and preserving water:
wastewater treatment
100% of breweries have a wastewater treatment system.
“We treat 100% of the wastewater generated in our facilities and comply with the discharge authorization granted.”
Training on efficient water use
To promote compliance with goal number 6: clean water and sanitation. Grupo Modelo has been responsible for sharing valuable and educational information related to water care.
“We collaborate to create awareness and promote the efficient use of water with interest groups by developing and teaching materials as well as providing training.”
Water Funds
Grupo Modelo has Water Funds that allow it to continue meeting its water management goal.
“We currently collaborate with 2 water funds, 1 in CDMX (Agua Capital) and another in Zacatecas. They are an innovative platform for collective, independent and plural collaboration, which seeks collaboration between the public, private and community sectors. This includes a clear formation process that includes: feasibility, design, creation, operation and consolidation.
